The New Jerusalem Museum (Moscow Region) is hosting an international exhibition entitled ‘Light Between Worlds,’ dedicated to the little-studied layer of Soviet, Uzbek, and Russian modernism of the 1920s and 1930s.

Born into a family of carpet weavers, artist Nikolai Karakhan learned ornamentation techniques from childhood. In the 1920s, he was already teaching art at a technical college, and in the 1930s, he joined the ‘Volkov Brigade’ art circle. This creative period of the artist is distinguished by the brightness of colours and an experimental approach to imagery. In the painting ‘Going to Work’, Karakhan depicts farmers with scythes walking to the field early in the morning in a post-avant-garde style.

The exhibition ‘Light Between Worlds’ will run until 8 November 2025.
